Organic matter reduction using four densities of seaweed (Gracilaria verucosa) and green mussel (Perna viridis) to improve water quality for aquaculture in Java, Indonesia

چکیده

The high organic waste content of river water in Demak, north coast Java, has caused traditional small-scale pond farmers to stop stocking shrimp. This paper examines whether seaweed and mussel will improve the quality these use. effect Gracilaria verucosa Perna viridis on was assessed by measuring removal rates (RRs) total material (TOM), ammonia nitrogen (TAN), nitrite, nitrate. specific growth (SGRs) were also measured. Thirty-six semi-outdoor tanks containing 800 L brackish 7 cm substrate randomly assigned four replications densities G. : 50 (S50), 100 (S100), 150 (S150), 200 (S200) g m −2 , P. 60 (M60), 90 (M90), 120 (M120), (M150) . Weekly, TOM, TAN, nitrate contents measured, weighted; RRs SGRs calculated at end study. significant for both mussel. more effective reducing TOM (by 38%) than (7%); achieved higher At S200, TAN decreased 7.4% 67%, respectively. M90, 38% 49%, However, nitrite increased significantly S200 M150. SGR lower that S150, S100, S50. best performing S100 M90.

Characterization of green mussel (Perna viridis) hydrolysate prepared using alcalase and starfruit (Averrhoa carambola. L) protease

This study was carried out to evaluate the efficiency of natural protease extracted from starfruit (Averrhoa carambola. L) to hydrolyse green mussel (Perna viridis). Starfruit juice from fruit of maturity index 2 was extracted and purified using acetone precipitation method. The obtained protease was then used to hydrolyse green mussel and compared with alcalase. The conditions used to produce ...

DNA damage in male gonad cells of Green mussel (Perna viridis) upon exposure to tobacco products.

DNA damage (determined by the Comet Assay) and the occurrence of deformed nuclei were measured as endpoints of genotoxicity in male gonad cells of the marine mussel (Perna viridis). Upon exposure of the organism to varying concentrations of extracts of smoked and non-smoked cigar tobacco over a period of 16 days, DNA damage was found to be highest in marine mussels exposed to extracts of smoked...

Simulation of “Net” Nutrients Removal by Green Mussel (Perna viridis) in Estuarine and Coastal Areas

Green mussels (Perna viridis) can effectively remove nutrients from seawater through their filtration process. This study aims to estimate “net” nutrient removal rate by green mussel through calculation of nutrient uptake and release. Nutrients (carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus) uptake was calculated based on the mussel filtration rate. Nutrient release was evaluated from carbon, nitrogen and ph...

Benzo[a]pyrene absorption and exposure pathways in the green mussel Perna viridis.

The absorption efficiency (AE) of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), a representative polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compound, in the green mussel Perna viridis was measured under different biological and food conditions (body size, food quantity, and food species). Uptake of BaP from the aqueous phase by different species of phytoplankton and green mussels was also experimentally quantified. A bioenergeti...

Modeling of cadmium bioaccumulation in two populations of the green mussel Perna viridis.

This study attempted to quantify differences in Cd biokinetics from two populations of green mussels (Perna viridis) from two sites (eastern and western) in Hong Kong with contrasting hydrological conditions. Body Cd concentrations were modeled using a simple biokinetic model coupled with measurements of dissolved Cd concentrations at each site. Mussels collected from the western site had three...
